Rupee Font Version 2.0

This is a new version of the Rupee font. Previous font doesn't contain glyphs for letters from A to Z. This font contains all letters.

Download and enjoy. Please let us know if you face any problem.

Thankyou all for the positive comments. Will reply and clarify each and every doubts.

Please note that we can use the rupee symbol globally only after unicode approves it. With this launch we have proved that, if all of us work together, we don't have to wait for anyone else to approve the symbol to start using it. If we start using it others wil have to follow.

We know that font creation is not a rocketscience. Anyone with a good knowledge in computers can do it. There are many free tools available too. If a small company like Foradian can do like this, just think what the Indian Govt and Media working together can achieve to get the rupee symbol into all PCs and Keyboards. It is possible and can be done in days.

Microsoft Excel

go to setting ----- > control panel ------> regional & lang option ------> customize ------> then click currency tab
Put currency symbol as " ` " click ok
Open excel
go to format cell (Ctrl + 1 command)
click to Number tab ------- > select currency as " ` " & ok it
select fonts as Rupee_Foradian.ttf

Linux Users

On both a website using the symbol and on receiving a mail with the Rupee symbol, a computer without the font installed just sees the ` symbol and not the Rupee symbol.

Is there a way to ensure that everyone around the world sees the correct symbol?

Come on guys! I don't see how it can be useful. Everyone says it is working, but I didn't see a single person typing the symbol here... I even tried typing it in MS Word and copying it to the browser, but it still doesn't work. Don't see the worth of it. But good try anyway. You can use it in word just like a symbol.

Get New Rupee Symbol while typing Rs.

1. Type our new Rupee symbol on new word document.
2. Select it.
3. Go to Tools -> Auto Correct Option -> Auto Correct Tab
4. In REPLACE column type Rs. and in WITH column select Formatted Text.
5. Click ok.
6. Now in any font whenever you’ll type Rs. it will automatic turn to our new Rupee Symbol.

Thanks, This is really useful. However the Rupee symbol does not appear very clear in font size 10. Font size 11 is when it starts to appear properly. You may like to do something about that. Well done for giving this symbol to people and that too so quickly.

For french keyboard users, once it's downloaded and you've chosen the Rupee foradian font on your Word application, you can press AltGr key and keeping it pressed, press the è or 7 key then release the AltGr key and press the è key again. You'll get the rupee symbol + some other symbol and you'll have to delete the second unneccessary one... a bit complicated but it works.

The process can be tweaked so that you can type in any font in MS Word yet you can get the Rupees symbol:

1) Type the Rupees Symbol in Microsoft Word through the grave acent symbol - ` (the key just above "tab" button in your keyboard).
2) Select the symbol (ie. Just like you do while copy pasting anything)
3) Click on Tools -> Autocorrect
4) In the Replace Text Box type in Rs.
5) Click on Add -> Ok

The design of your symbol is not correct. It has a vertical line starting from the second parallel line, which is not there in the approved symbol of rupee. You may enlarge the font size to view the mistake. Please do the needful correction before the font is downloaded by too many.

Many thanks for your very well-legible sans-serif rupee-font. I have made the shortcut key Alt+R+F to bring the rupee symbol in the MS-Word document. I have a vehement request. I am involved in the movement concerning the artificial language called Esperanto. In its alphabet, the five letters c, g, h, j, s, have an angular cap on them and the letter u has a semicircular cup on it. With these additions, your font will be the home-font of millions. Please give it a thought.

You are mis-leading people by coming up with a font for this symbol. This should be implemented as a Unicode symbol and not as some font. It has to be approved by the Unicode Consortium. Also, this method won't work if you send the document to someone who doesn't have this font. This looks like just a marketing gimmick to get some publicity for the company. This font is not useful anywhere except your own computer, what's the point? You can use it in emails, chats, even web-sites.

Good effort. Congratulations to you. I could download and use the new font. The only problem is that, if the font size is small both the horizontal lines are merging together and looks like a single line and the symbol of Rupee seems like the hindi alphabet.

Thanks so much for this. Great and quick effort, though I do agree that this is not all that hard to create.

Just a thought - could you make the currency symbol more legible? The second horizontal dash is not distinguishable in normal font sizes that are used in everyday text - such as size 10-12. It is clearly visible when magnified. To that extent, it becomes a design problem.

Perhaps your team used the dimension definition of the design to the dot. Perhaps that's something the Indian government needs to define clearly in terms of dimensions and measurements, but for now, lowering the dash somewhat closer to the middle of the symbol will work wonders in normal font sizes.

Just by embedding the font on your pc/device doesn't mean it will be embedded across all the devices. I hope you realize you are misleading everyone. You have simply remapped the (`) key(very smartly used the most unused symbol on the keyboard) to the Re symbol.

You being a web design company should have understood the concept of font embedding across multiple devices easily.

this works as a upper case character only. you may have to zoom in using some tool, to see if thsi actually converts the simbol ` into a "Ra". surely it does not work when you change the size of teh font. you can barely see this on screen. waste of time. i shall cointinue to use INR. we should have owrked with Microsoft and Mac guys before all this halla baloo. thsi is emarassment

Well done Foradian. This works with Mac too. After installing the download in the Fonts (Macintosh > Library > Fonts), using the `~ key next to the Shift key brings the symbol. In the windows virtual machine, ±§ key above the shift key brings the symbol.

It might only work for US/Indian Keyboard. It is not working on Other. I just tried on Norwegian Keyboard. Even changed it to US and checked but does not work (as it types `~ means Keyboad was successfully converted to match Indian keyboard (US))

Please note that Font creation is not a rocketscience. Anyone with a good knowledge in computer can do it. There are many free tools available too.

If a small company like Foradian can do like this, just think what the Indian Govt and Media working together can achieve to get the rupee symbol into all PCs and Keyboards. It is possible and can be done in days.

It works very well. However the danger is if we do use it, people who do not have this font installed see the ` symbol, just as you see here in this comment. I undid the recommended tweak when i realized it. Please be careful when using this "Tweak" or the symbol in documents sent to other people.

Great work - but a small bug is there - in office 2010 with the rupee and rupee foradian fonts, if you go to insert symbol and scroll down, youll see that any previous symbols which were combinations of ` and a letter are horribly screwed.

ok looks like posts are coming up instantly so here goes again: for french keyboard users, once the font is downloaded, on a Word or Excel page, choose the Rupee foradian font and then press on the Alt Gr key and keeping it pressed, press on the è key. Then release the Alt Gr key and press the è key again. You'll get 2 symbols, one of which you can delete.

New Rupee Font works perfectly in Linux (Fedora 13. It should work on other flavours also).
Instructions for installing ttf file in Linux:
As root user
1. Create a directory with "mkdir /usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType/" (without quotes) if it does not exists.
2. Move the downloaded .ttf file to the above directory.
3. Issue this command ttmkfdir > fonts.dir

Thats it. Now open the OpenOffice Writer and Select the "Fordian Rupee"

Installing downloaded fonts in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Open the folder where you have downloaded the font file.

Double click on the font file to open it. This opens a font viewer window.

On the right there is a button, "Install Font". Click on it.

Wait until the button turns to greyed out "Installed".

Hello someone.

Have you tried to type it using the specified combo ? It is really difficult. We have know this glyph when we were creating font.

Please note that we placed the font instead of grave accent to make the process of typing simple. Just look at the above comments to see how many people are finding it difficult to type even in this simple method. Only solution is special key in keyboard. We have to wait till then.

You cant frighten us with the F-Bomb. We use it a lot. :D

this is great work - but could you _temporarily_ make a version of the font that uses the "Private Use Area" (http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/private_use_area.html) of the Unicode set. This way I will be able to type "Ctrl+Shift+u+<unique>" and get the rupee symbol.

Currently, with your symbol re-using the ` symbol, I am not able to type this in my browser or twitter .. which is where I shall be using it.

There is no indication that the relevant authorities plan to reject this proposal or delay it unnecessarily, or that font vendors plan to ignore Indian needs by failing to support this character once encoded. It would be more productive and beneficial for Indian information processing needs to wait for this brand-new symbol to be formally encoded, than to rely on 1990s-era font hacks that will shortly be outdated and will cause long-lasting data integrity problems. THE f BOMB is not for the font you made, its for the statement "as the new symbol is not encoded in to unicode"! Unicode contains value for INR. So one more F bomb ;)

Replacing ` with new rupee symbol make it font depended. All text with graves like à, è will look like _fbomb_. Making fonts Dependable is not a good practice in font development. I just checked the font in fontforge, it shows the system uses 'Reference' for designing those glyphs. Unlink those à, è and design the separately, so that it will be fine.

This is a great approach by Foradian Technologies. I congratulate them for their work. People working on MS Word extensively always thought of having our own currency symbol for Indian Rupee just like US Dollar, British Pounds, European Euro, and Japanese Yen. Since, it would make their work easier, as instead of using INR or Rs one symbol would do it all for them. Especially, professionals working in the fields of stock exchange (shares market), import and export business, currency conversion, etc, will be benefited from this font addition to their MS Word software.

People are giving knee-jerk comments. There is no big deal in crearing a rupee sign. Big deal is to acceptance for use. The governement said it will take a year; this period is for changing in all currencies, documents and so all. It is not easy as designing a font character.

This does not bring portability. I'd not install a new font that replaces ` key. that's ridiculous. better prefer an img for displaying on webpages.

Your effort is good but not in right direction. What I expect from you is to release high resolution, various sizes (16x16, 32x32, etc), transparent PNGs that can be used in any web as well as word documents.

Here is an alternative for those who don't want to use special fonts or symbols. Ultimately, the rupee symbol is the Devanagari ra with a strike-through and this can be used until a special Unicode character is available. It asks for "continue" for windows font folder. I "continue".

I hv Windows Vista Home Starter. I cld not dnload the Rupee font & install with the procedure
as per Times of India. But I did not give up. I dnloaded the font & saved it to "My Documents".
Then rt clked the item & from the menu selected "Install" & the font got thro' to my Fonts folder.
I hv changed the fonts of all my documents to Rupee Foradian.
Why shld I not use my country's own font?

Excell>>Tools>>Options>>General>>Standard Font -> change to Rupee Foradian
If this is not done the font in the cell needs to be change every time a new sheet is opened unless using an Excel Template.

For use with excel
go to setting ----- > control panel ------> regional & lang option ------> customize ------> then click currency tab
Put currency symbol as " ` " click ok
Open excel
go to format cell (Ctrl + 1 command)
click to Number tab ------- > select currency as " ` " & ok it
select fonts as Rupee_Foradian.ttf
now amount will appear as $ 100,000/-
(here $ stands for new rupee symbol)

at the size 10, the horizontal lines on the rupee symbol merge. The same is alright a 9 or even 8 & 11. Also the spacing is erratic in some letters like if you write 'will' it will be have erratic spacing. Kindly rectify these small issues.

Hi there,
We tried to use the Re symbol that u have made available via this blog. The problem that we faced was that we had decrease the size of the symbol manually — say, we select 36 size font; then, we see that Re symbol is two sizes (38) bigger than our normal 36 font. Then, we have to manually decrease its (Re symbol's) size. Please let me know if there is a solution.

We use the Quark Express 4 version. And if after changing it in Word, when we bring it to the page, instead of the Re symbol, we get the quote (`).

The other problem is that we can't find-replace it — neither in Word nor in Quark Express.

I installed it yesterday and it working fine till last evening. Today I can't find the Font name in the font dropdown list. Even the mails I had used it in is now showing a blank space inplace of the rupee symbol and a different font for other letters.

I hv Windows Vista Home Starter. I cld not dnload the Rupee font & install with the procedure as per Times of India. But I did not give up. I dnloaded the font & saved it to "My Documents". Then rt clked the item & from the menu selected "Install" & the font got thro' to my Fonts folder. I hv changed the fonts of all my documents to Rupee Foradian. Why shld I not use my country's own font?

A zillion thanks to foradian for their proactive initiative. however, an easy way of typing in the rupee symbol after installing the font would be to use 'insert symbol', select 'rupee foradian' font set, select the rupee symbol from the font set, and configure a keyboard short-cut key by clicking on 'shortcut key' within the same window - in my case I have configured 'alt+r' as I can identify easily with 'rupee'. This of course, is for all MS Office applications.

in word 2007 to put in auto correct do the following.
Do one of the following in these Microsoft Office programs:
Word

Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Word Options.
Click Proofing.
Click AutoCorrect Options

Replace Rs. with the font. Now in any font whenever you’ll type Rs. it will automatic turn to our new Rupee Symbol

HI.. great work. But in my humble opinion , the rupee symbol , looks a bit "weak"... perhaps , a little more bold will look good, like "$" ... I feel it should take a little more horizontal space. But nevertheless GREAT WORK!!
