Font with Indian Rupee Symbol - Download and Use Free
We have made the first font with support for Indian currency symbol.
1. Download the above attached font Rupee.ttf or the new version Rupee_Foradian.ttf
2. Install the font. (It is easy. Just copy the font and paste it in "Fonts" folder in control panel)
3. Start using it. :)
How to type the Rupee symbol ?
We mapped the grave acent symbol - ` (the key just above "tab" button in your keyboard) with the new Rupee symbol. Just select "Rupee" font from the drop down list of your fonts in your application and press the key just above your tab button. It will display our new rupee symbol. Try it.
The "Rupee.ttf" font is necessary to view the currency symbol. So as long as the new symbol is not encoded in to unicode font by default, we cant use the symbol universally.
Update - 9pm, July 16, 2010
Some people reported that they are facing a problem to select font from the drop down list of MS Office and similar applications. This is because we haven't included glyphs for letters from A to Z. We are serious about copyright issues. Most of the fonts have complex copyright terms.
We have a solution and released the version 2.0 of the Rupee font. This one contains all the glyphs(letters) and is based on BitstreamVera

Great work! However, do you find the fond a bit mismatched with the numbers in terms of its size? I tried it in word, and it looks the rupee font is slightly bigger than the numbers. I use Trebuchet font in the office, and use the new sign by switching to the new font for entering the 'Rs' only when typing fresh. Now I would like to replace the 'Rs' in existing documents also, by replacing them. Tried copying the new sign [from one sentence in the new font] to the Replace With field, but that does not work.

FORADIOAN, you are too fast to follow. I was thinking that the Rupee symbol font created by us will be the first. I downloaded and used your rupee symbol font. It is good. However, as I have perceived the actual symbol's corners are round rather than edged corners. One can also download the SofexIndia.TTF FONTS created by us from the following links:

By installing it in the windows font directory and selecting SofexIndia font in the font menu (group) just type small 'r' or comma ',' to generate the Rupee Symbol Font.

Its good to see symbol within 48 hrs in net. But this symbol is not ready to use by the users.
As the it require to change the fonts every time, which will reduce the typing speed.
This should be developed in such a way that it will appear on just click of button in stead of selection of fonts and button.

Am a journalist, so would love to see the new rupee symbol in print. So far only the Times of India group has managed it. But the new symbol can only be used in bold headlines 20 points in size or more. In the body copy, it will appear as a smudge since the point size is much smaller. The dollar symbol comes with just a single vertical slash instead of two slashes for easier visibility in print. The rupee symbol with the single horizontal topmost slash will look like Ra in Devnagari. Some modification is needed.

It is good work. However the Symbol cannot be seen on other computers when the same document is opened.
Only it can be seen if the both the computers are having this Tiff file in their Font folder..

My os is Windows XP2 and am using MS Office 2003. I do transcription work. I use font Arial or Times Roman. How to get this symbol incorporated in the same? The fact is that when I press the key above the "tab" ~` my default font changes to Rupee Foradian and I have to move my fingers off the keyboard to change back to default font of Arial/Times Roman. Or will this be done by Microsoft? Until then it is of little use to me.

Great! Feels proud to type the 'Indian Rupee' symbol on a computer. On a Mac unit, after loading the fonts, we have to press Ctrl-'~' and then release both keys and then press the '~' key again in one go. '~' appears left of the 'Z' key. Thanks for the font. There is both a serif and san-serif font available (for numericals only). Great job guys...

I dont really like this symbol. It appears yet another imposition of Hindi on non hindi people. It is very similar to Hindi letter. Due to new found relationship, dravidian parties are not opposing this. When leaders keep mum, what I can do? Just accept it and hate it.

RTI Activists exposed Rupee Symbol Scam :
According to RTI Documents :
1. Non-eligible candidate was shortlisted in top five finalists as candidate had submitted four designs and later on declared as winner.
2. One finalist was in contact with Finance Ministry and RBI prior to competition.
3. Design concept or brief was not put in front of jury along with Indian Rupee symbol design.
4. No marks or grades were allotted to selected (2644) candidates design entries, in the process of shortlisting top five finalist design entries.
5. Jury had spends less than 20 seconds on each design entries to analyze it .
6. Three jury member were absent in two days long meeting dated 29th Sept. and 30th Sept. 2009.
7. One jury member from Ministry of Culture was absent on the day of final presentation.
8. All seven jury member had never meet in this whole selection process in any given time.
9. No records are available with Finance Ministry which could indicated, how many total design entries Finance Ministry had received ?
10. Advertisement was only published in English language which only 23% population of this country understand.
